April 2023

We are pleased to announce that the Chinese edition of Putting Purpose Into Practice: the Economics of Mutuality, first published in English by Oxford University Press in 2021, will be serialized by China Family Business Review – a magazine managed by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, a Chinese State Council-owned research institute and think tank.

The sharing of chapters through this influential publication across the year will further extend the reach of Economics of Mutuality ideas in China. Co-edited by Oxford Professor Colin Mayer and former Mars Chief Economist Bruno Roche, the book includes breakthrough theoretical developments and practical case studies across geographies and business situations.

Putting Purpose Into Practice contends that if business is to significantly outperform, it must integrate impact as a driver of value creation rather than a variable that measures collateral damages. In other words, successful business leaders and investors must no longer focus exclusively on short-term profit maximization within the boundaries of their firms, which is not even within their interests, but instead on creating mutual value for multiple stakeholders outside the firm and across financial and non-financial forms of capital.

Mayer and Roche hope the edited volume, which includes chapter contributions from some 50+ multidisciplinary experts, will trigger great interest among Chinese-speaking leaders committed to the Common Prosperity agenda — and encourage them to join, contribute to, and further develop the Economics of Mutuality movement with Chinese characteristics.

Xiang Bing, Founding Dean of Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, has said “We can draw inspiration from this book: One must not only achieve something for oneself, but also for everything outside oneself, and during this process take on a global role through innovation”.

Wu Chen, Managing Director of The Economist Global Business Review, has commented that the “new tools promoted by the Economics of Mutuality, such as the reciprocal income statement which better measures ‘externalities’, are likely to be new tools for regulating late capitalism and promoting long-term sustainable development”.
